Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga was elected chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Monday, replacing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

As Japan's prime minister is elected by MPs, it is widely expected that Suga will take over after Abe’s decision to step down last month.

Suga will have the right to serve the remainder of Abe's term, but he is also expected to call an early general elections next month.
