Frequently asked questions

What are indices and how do I trade them?

A group or basket of stocks are called an ‘index’ or ‘indices’. Indices are a measurement of the value (and pricing) of a specific section of the stock market, which allow traders to speculate on entire sectors at once. Grouping selected stocks or assets into an index creates a cost-effective mechanism for trading on a sector’s performance - i.e. opening a single position to trade on the entire UK100 - which tracks the 100 largest companies on the London Stock Exchange (LSE).

You can also trade on forex indices like ‘DXY’ which tracks the performance of USD weighted against major currencies from across the world.

Rather than directly purchasing stocks within an index, CFD indices trading involves entering into a contract with a broker to exchange the difference in the price of an index from the time the contract is opened to when it is closed. You can take long (buy) or short (sell) positions on these CFDs, which allows you to potentially profit from both upward and downward movements in the index prices.

In addition, you can trade CFD indices using leverage. This means traders can control larger positions with a relatively small amount of capital, which can amplify both potential profits and losses.

We offer commission-free rolling major and minor stock market indices from around the world including AUS200 (Australia roll), China50, EU50 (Europe roll), DE40 (Germany roll), FR40 (France roll), HK50 (Hong Kong roll), India50, JP225 (Japan roll), ES35 (Spain roll), UK100 (United Kingdom roll) and US rolls like US500, UT100 and US30.

Yes, we offer margin-free hedging where any hedged positions are set to ‘zero’. This means you do not need a margin to maintain the position which will show your net position equal to zero. This allows you to benefit from more available funds, but it can also pose the risk of triggering ‘margin call’ or ‘stop out' events when sudden spread widening (eg. during news releases).

Please consider rolling fees over weekends in your financial planning as margin-free hedged positions are not swap-free - unless you are trading on a swap-free account.

Stocks and indices are related, but they are not the same thing.

A stock represents ownership in a single company. When you buy a stock, you're purchasing a small piece of that company. On the other hand, an index (or stock index) is a group of stocks that represent a particular sector, market or economy. Instead of owning a single company’s stock, when you invest in an index, you're essentially investing in a basket of stocks and their collective performance.

In online trading, trading stocks means you're speculating on the price movement of an individual company. With index trading, you're speculating on the movement of a group of stocks.

Stocks can offer higher returns if a company performs very well, but they can also lose value more quickly if the company struggles, meaning they come with higher risk. Indices, however, are generally more stable because they represent a broader range of companies. Index investors and traders typically benefit from the overall market’s growth over time.

Here are the three indices that are often considered the most important or popular:

1- S&P 500

The S&P 500 is a stock market index that tracks the performance of 500 of the largest publicly traded companies in the US. It’s considered one of the best representations of the overall US stock market.

2- Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA)

The DJIA is one of the oldest and most famous stock market indices in the world. It tracks the performance of 30 large, publicly traded US companies. These companies are mostly from sectors like industrials finance and technology.

3- NASDAQ-100

The NASDAQ-100 is an index that tracks the performance of the top 100 non-financial companies listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange. It’s heavily weighted toward technology companies.

Trading indices allows for easy diversification and gives you the flexibility to go long or short, increasing profit opportunities. Indices can also be used as a hedging strategy against existing stock positions. When trading indices, it's important to stay informed about factors that can influence index prices, such as geopolitical events, currency movements, changes to index composition, economic news and investor sentiment, among others, in order to make strategic decisions.

The potential for loss is a risk in any type of trading, as factors like expiration dates, market volatility and inexperience can all influence the outcome.

However, indices offer the advantage of diversification by spreading risk across multiple companies and industries, which can help reduce exposure to the performance of any single stock.

By using the right risk management strategies, traders can manage risks effectively and make more informed decisions. Some ways to reduce risk when trading indices include:

Use stop loss orders: Set predetermined exit points to limit potential losses and protect your capital.

Diversify your portfolio: Trading multiple indices or assets can help spread risk across different markets.

Stay informed: Continuously monitor market trends, economic news and events that could impact index performance.

Start small: Begin with smaller trades to gain experience and reduce exposure while learning about index trading.

With these strategies in place, you can reduce the risks and increase your chances of making informed, strategic trades.
